Chapter 12 Blog

Chapter 12 of the “Transforming Learning with New Technologies” is entitled “Integrating Technology and Creating Change as Teacher Leaders” and focuses on how technology is integrated within stages and issues. What this means is that technology cannot be integrated within one step, but many baby steps. This will allow the technology to be integrated in the best possible way as well as the most successful way possible. There are five technology integration states- entry, adoption, adaption, appropriation, and invention.  The stages are as following:
Entry- The point to acknowledge in this phase is that an instructional technology already existed in the classroom before. This could refer to use of common tools were blackboards, textbooks, workbooks, and overhead projectors. This just means that the teacher may know some fundamental skills on technology, but not too much.
Adoption- During this phase, both teachers and students master the many skills and ideas that successful computer use requires. However, the changes have to be small and not significant because significant changes may confused students.
Adaptation- In this phase, productivity increases greatly. Change in the quality of student engagement in classroom tasks.
Appropriation- As teachers independently reached this stage, their roles began to shift noticeably and new instructional patterns emerged. For example, the teacher is using technology at a regular basis in the classroom.
Invention- The final stage where teachers explore new ways to use technology in the classroom since they are comfortable with using other tech tools.

Implementing change in education such as using technology, must be done in steps. This means gradually replacing old ideas with new ideas, which is where the five steps above will be helpful.
Questions I can ask myself
1) How can this change occur in whole schools and not only the classroom?
2) How can teachers use the technology they have available in their classrooms to promote successful learning?
3) What do teachers do if the technology use in the classroom ends up being unsuccessful?

  2. Hi Olivia! I agree with your statement, "Implementing change in education such as using technology, must be done in steps." When using technology, it is important that the teacher plans everything out according to the students so they have a meaningful learning experience with technology.

Great job explaining the stages of technology integration.I can see why Incorporating technology can be difficult so it needs to be implemented in steps. Good post!

This was a really interesting post. I agree with what you stated, "Implementing change in education such as using technology, must be done in steps. This means gradually replacing old ideas with new ideas, which is where the five steps above will be helpful." You have explained the stages of technology integration in an informative way. This breaks down for teachers how they can integrate technology in classrooms that will enhance learning.
